SchoolTube offers many resources for both established and new school TV news programs. School TV news programs are a wonderful way to both share school news and announcements, but also deeply engage students and build 21st Century skills. (Plus, parents love to see their kids on TV!)
Setting up a school TV news program can be a done on a budget if funds are tight, and if ample funding is available, the result can be an amazing studio setting and production just like you see on your local news.
To keep things simple, there are two main areas to consider when setting up a school TV news program: Production & Sharing. Production entails everything from set design, to scripting, to lighting, to filming/recording, student management and editing. SchoolTube University offers a free video on how to start a school TV news program that covers all the production elements in great detail. Also found on SchoolTube University are videos on filming and production techniques from VideoMaker. So, please check out SchooolTube University.
Sharing is the process of distributing the school TV news show to your classrooms, parents and communities. More advanced school TV news programs are now using live streaming (spoiler alert: live streaming coming to SchoolTube in 2020) to share each news show. Live streaming is sharing the live feed through the internet to a destination like Facebook Live or YouTube live or some other paid live streaming system. Live streaming is not for the faint of heart…things can go wrong during production and all that goes live, plus the set up process is a bit complicated, and if you air through a social media site like Facebook Live or YouTube live, then your viewers are subject to all the unwanted content that comes along with those programs.
If you don’t want to live stream, the alternative is to produce and record the shows, and then share the recordings, and that is where SchoolTube steps up to the plate. Not everyone can or will watch the shows live, so some recorded process needed regardless. In fact, most of your viewing overt time will happen from the recorded shows, not the live.
SchoolTube is that safe repository for hosting and sharing school TV news programs. Because of our proprietary content moderation process there is no inappropriate content or comments on SchoolTube. Under SchoolTube you can set up a FREE school TV news channel, which can be shared directly with your students, parents, and community. Further, under this channel you can save videos into playlists that correspond to months of the school year or other elements that fit your education environments.
Many school TV news programs like to take thing a step farther and create their own school TV news website. This also teaches students 21st century skills. SchoolTube supports this by allowing our video players to be embedded on to web page. This is a very simple process and is explained in this video on sharing SchoolTube videos.
We covered lots of information here. The main thing, is don’t be afraid to start a school TV news program. Your students and parents will LOVE it. Have several practice sessions before you go live, start with bi-weekly vs daily (which is a grind!) and use SchoolTube, and everything will be fine!
