Automated Closed Captioning & On-Page Captions Editor Now Available on SchoolTube
Fully automated closed captioning and an on-page captions editor is now available from SchoolTube. For K12 schools adding captions to videos they share on their website or through other online means is not a matter of convenience, its the law. SchoolTube’s new automated closed-captioning system and on-page editor makes it easy for schools to comply with captioning requirements as established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
How SchoolTube Automated Captioning Works
Prior to the release of this new feature, SchoolTube users could caption videos but had to do so in two steps, first upload the video, then apply captions. Now, English captions are added automatically as part of the upload process saving time and placing schools in a safer position with regards to ADA rules.
SchoolTube utilizes an automatic speech recognition process (speech-to-text) to caption videos, which is typically about 80% accurate. To perfect or correct any misinterpretations, users can open the on-page editor where the captions are displayed in time-stamped increments. Alongside the editor is a video player that displays the captions so that users can review the on-screen captions as well as the text version. The captions editor can be accessed from the Captions & Enhance link found under the Actions area of the video management page.
Why Captioning School Videos is Important
As noted above, the ADA requires all videos publicly shared by a school be captioned, this includes public schools, charter schools, and private schools. The ADA holds that schools are places of “public accommodation” and must offer captions on videos for those who may need or desire to watch them. It’s the same principle as making a school wheelchair accessible, even though no one in a wheelchair may attend the school. The school must be accommodating and be prepared for people with disabilities who may arrive at any time, and that arrival could be on a school website.
Other reasons to caption. Captions are also important resources for those who may learn better through reading, vs watching. Comprehension for some is increased when the words are displayed alongside video content. Plus, are a convenience when viewing a video in a loud environment or when trying to maintain a quiet environment, such as a library.
